Mount Abu

Mount Abu, the picturesquely thick lush green, wooded resort is situated
on a hilltop plateau. It is Rajasthan’s only hill station. Due to the proximity
of Nakki Lake, the flora and fauna enjoys the adulation of the tourist to
the fullest. The place has a vast sanctuary in the thicket, sheltering species
like langur, wild boars, sambar, leopards, etc. besides nesting by variety
of bird species. The British came here for relaxation in their bungalows
and to strategically mingle with the royalties.
The Jains were a rich trading community in the area who financed the armies
of Rajput rulers like Rana Pratap to keep the invading Mughals at bay. Secure
under the Rajputs, the wealthy Jains built some spectacular temples at Dilwara,
most famous of which is the 12th century shrine of the Jain tirthankara,
Adinath.
Most of the Jain temples in the area have mesmerizing architectural genius
in intricate carvings on marble. The Chaumukha Temple is an air structure
with 29 halls, 420 pillars each carved in a uniquely different design. Another
charming feature are the bells attached to the shikhars that crown the temple;
they tinkle gently with the breeze creating serene atmosphere.
This glorious ambience suited mainly to the likes of sages and tribals and
both made a great impact in the history of the region. A cluster of Hindu
temples also marks the land with their historical past. The tribes still
conducting their authentic life styles in the wake of 21st century is rather
interesting and so is the collection of various monuments of different religious
sects like the famous shrines of Jainism.
The Brahmkumari Ashram is another world famous religious community center.
